Glaze Mixing 101 - The First Five

The first five was developed by Old Forge Cermics as an easy and inexpensive entry to glaze mixing that uses the same five basic ingredients. In this 2-part workshop we’ll discuss some glaze mixing basics and mix 3 base glazes (gloss, floating and matte) so participants can do their own experiments with colorants. The idea is to allow participants to become comfortable with the mixing process and experiment a little. Each participant will mix their own set of base glazes that they will be able to experiment with after class.

Part 1: September 20th at 11am - 3pm

The first day of the workshop will include some discussion of basic glaze chemistry and mixing, mixing the bases and experimenting with colorants to make test tiles. Please bring a packed lunch.

Part 2: September 27th at 1pm

We will get together for an hour or so to review our test tiles and share results.

What to bring:

  • A minimum of 30 test tiles (feel free to bring more). Ideally, I’d like everyone to do 5-10 tests with each base. Feel free to bring more.

  • A mask/respirator to use while mixing glazes.

  • Notebook & pen/pencil

  • Optional: a scale that goes to at least one decimal point, an immersion blender, sharpie. We will have some at the studio, but things will go faster if we are not all sharing one or two. Note, I wouldn’t advise using the scale/blender on food after using to mix glazes.

Note - we will be mixing outside.

Payment is due at the first workshop. You can pay ahead of time via Venmo @lindsayrenz or PayPal @lindsayrenz.  Just let Lindsay know if you want her to send you a payment request from either.
